Extended Knowledge Project

Can groups of individuals combine their knowledge to create something greater than the sum of their parts? How do they do it and what processes are at work? Dr Orestis Palermos from the Group Knowledge Project at the University of Edinburgh is studying this phenomenon. He explains that Wikipedia is perhaps the best example of such a ‘social machine’ and that Sir Tim Berners Lee, pioneer of the world wide web was one of the first people to discuss how such a collaborative approach will dramatically change human co-operation in the future.
