Dr James Maynard, Fellow in Mathematics at Magdalen College, University of Oxford talks to Prof Denis Noble. They discuss the gaps between prime numbers, an area of study which won James the Ramanujan Prize in 2014. As well as the pure beauty of mathematical study, the work also has practical consequences – prime numbers are vital in cryptography and so therefore crucial in day to day activities such as protecting our credit card details when we shop online.
